First stop is in Tepelena castle a historic fortress that stands as a testament to the region’s rich past and strategic significance. Perched atop a hill overlooking the Vjosa River valley, the castle offers panoramic views and a glimpse into Albania’s cultural heritage.
The castle’s origins date back to ancient times, with subsequent expansions and renovations reflecting various historical periods, including Byzantine and Ottoman influences. Its sturdy stone walls, towers, and defensive structures showcase the fortress’s importance in guarding the surrounding territory and controlling key trade routes.
Near Tepelena Castle, the iconic Ali Pasha Bridge, a marvel of Ottoman engineering and a symbol of Ali Pasha’s influence in the region during the 18th and 19th centuries. The bridge spans the Vjosa River, connecting the castle area with the surrounding countryside and serving as a vital link for travelers and traders.
A brief stop to take some pictures of the old Ali Pasha acueduct.
Next is The Waterfalls of Peshtura are a series of natural cascades known for their scenic beauty and tranquil surroundings. Situated amidst lush greenery and rugged terrain, these waterfalls offer a refreshing escape into nature. The road is a brief hiking trail through a canyon so bring your shoes and a bathing suit to visit this marvellous place.
The tour concludes in Nivica. A beautiful village on top of a canyon, with marvellous viewpoints and a lunch with a view you’ll never forget.( lunch at your own expense )
